How to Become an ODP Editor

Search box here

So ya wanna be an ODP editor eh? No sweat! Take your time, read the instructions, and plan to make a contribution to the categorization of information on the web. Like most everything else here at Web Marketing Superstar, becoming an ODP editor is EASY! Here's how:

  • Search ODP for a category of interest
  • Keep searching until you find a category with less than 75 sites.
  • Try to find a category with no listed editor.
  • Once you find a category, it's time to fill out the editor application.

At the top of your chosen category, there should be a link, "become an editor", click on that. This is the application form you must fill out to be considered as an editor. Fields on the application include the following:

  • Contact Information - Provide your name, email, select a username, password, and a language.
  • Describe your experience and interest in this subject area: An editor should know something about their chosen category. Be honest and write briefly about your knowledge of the subject.
  • What is your Business Affiliation with this category? It's best to start out with a category in which you have no business interest. In the eyes of ODP you are there to edit and contribute to the directory. This may include listing your own site, however you'll be around much longer and save yourself many headaches if you go in first and foremost to build the directory.
  • Please provide 2 or 3 URLs that you would add to this
category, along with a title and description for each.
  1. Pick 3 URLs, not two
  2. Pick URLs not already in the directory
  3. Don't include your own site
  4. Read the guidelines and follow them when you put titles and descriptions for the sites submitted in your application.
  5. The title should be the title of the site or name of company - nothing more, no taglines, no keywords, and no descriptions in the title.
  6. The descriptions should be objective, factual, express no opinions, contain no words in ALL CAPS, no exclamation points, quotes or question marks. In short about 15-20 words describing the site.
  7. A good editor has attention to detail and can spell. Spell check your application - twice.
  8. When you re finished, click submit and you should receive some sort of reply within a few weeks.

Follow these steps carefully, take your time on the application, and be honest and you'll be editing in no time! Hop on over to ODP and pick your category now!
