Personal
web site, or corporate category killer; a solid web directory strategy
lays the foundation for a dramatic increase in online visibility. Web
directories include YAHOO!, LookSmart,
Open Directory Project, Business.com,
and HotRate.
Unlike search
engine submissions, submissions to web directories must be done right
the first time. When submitting to a web site directory, keep in mind:
- All submissions
are reviewed by humans; you can fool a search engine spider but not
an experienced editor.
- A web
site directory does not list every page of a web site (so don't submit
every page!)
- Once a
site is listed in a web site directory, it can be very difficult to
change; it's got to be done right the first time!
- People
will search for your site based on keywords, carefully determine the
right keywords for your description before submission to a directory.
- YAHOO!
offers a business express option. They will review your site for inclusion
within 7 business days for $299.00. This is now an annual fee. The free
submission option in noncommercial categories can take forever to get
listed.
- After
a recent change, LookSmart now allows 1 listing for commercial sites
on a small budget and charges .15 per click.
- The Open
Directory Project (ODP) is edited by volunteers. It can take a long
time to get listed but is well worth the wait.
- The ODP,
LookSmart and YAHOO! directories are the highest leverage, most important
submissions you will make. They will have a dramatic effect on your
search engine visibility.
