Everyone has heard of meta tags. Useful meta tags include the keyword meta tag and description meta tag. Can you really improve web page ranking by adjusting the keyword meta tag? Maybe a little bit, but not significantly.

Meta data is data about data, in essence, a summary. In the days of long, long ago meta tags were presumed to be reliable indicators of web page content. Due to large scale abuse, the use of the keyword meta tag is no longer the magic bullet to improve a web page ranking.

Some engines still consider them. It is still considered good HTML format to incluse the keyword meta tag, so let's learn how to do it!

Addition of the meta keyword tag is simple. It goes in the <head> section of a web page in the following way:

<html>

<head>

<title>The keyword meta tag, will it improve web page ranking?</title>

<meta name="keywords" content="keyword meta tag improve web page ranking meta tags meta tag optimization html meta tag">

<meta name="description" content="Learn about the keyword meta tag and its effect on web page ranking">

</head>

The text in red is the keywords, the blue is the HTML code that tells a search enigne that the keywords are the keywords.

What goes in the keyword meta tag?

Like most other web markting principles, it is very simple. The keyword meta tag is summary of the important keywords and phrases on the web page. Use the following rules when adding keyword meta tags to your web pages:

  • Limit the words in the keyword meta tag to words on the actual web page or synonyms of words on the actual web page.
  • Repeat phrases no more than 3 times in the keyword meta tag
  • Don't expect to greatly improve web page rankings by adding keyword meta tags.
  • If you are short on time, focus on web page titles and skip the keyword tags.
  • You don't need commas in between keywords or phrases in the keyword tag

If you have the time, add the keyword meta tag to your web pages, if not don't sweat it!
