Marketing on the web requires a new skill set. It is however, one that draws heavily on things you probably already know. There are many parallels between the world wide web, and the world that existed before the Internet exploded on to the scene carrying with it an incredible amount of hype, ridiculous stock valuations, and lots of confusion about how to conduct, market, and build a business on the web. This quick start guide will inform you of the basics, explain how to begin promotion your site, and show you how to do it.

The design of your web site may have a rather large impact on how visible it can become. If your site utilizes frames or is dynamically generated, you will be able to get started with the basics, but will run in to trouble further down the line. If you are unsure if your site falls in to this category, click on the link below to find out what frames are, what it means when a site is dynamically generated, and exactly why these issues will almost undoubtedly cause problems in the future.

The quick start guide covers search engines and directories, and what you need to do to your site to get the most out of them. These methods are non-revenue based traffic generation methods. They will not cost you anything, you can do them yourself, though it will take some time and effort. This series of articles is for you if:

  • You have a web site and have done no promotion for it
  • You have had a service submit your site to the top 10 or 10,000 search engines and seen no results
  • You want to begin implementing a long term strategy to ensure your web site is successful well in to the future.
  • You have been deemed the web marketing person in your company and want to learn more about promoting your site.
  • You are just curious about web site promotion techniques.
  • You are thoroughly confused about how to get started promoting your web site

Remember, planning is half the battle, plan the design of your site carefully. One that is full of useful content, does not use frames, is not totally made up of Flash, and other fancy (and unfriendly to search engines) files, and is not dynamically generated.

Lets proceed to step one, a brainstorming session, and an understanding of keywords and key phrases that relate to your site.

What are keywords, how do I determine them, & why do I need them?
